Collecting the existing published papers into a single collection, making
them more available to researchers and amateurs. This, of course, is
subject to copyright limitations, but as may of the relevant papers are in
excess of 50 years old, this should not present an overwhelming problem.
For each paper, I perform the same procedure, to make sure I don't
overlook anything. I've layed it out here as a checklist. That way,
I can print out a copy of this page, and tick things off as I go.
- If it isn't in English, obtain a translation.
- If permitted by copyright: Scan the paper into the
computer, and turn it into text using OCR. Create a directory
under papers/ to
hold it.
- For each species mentioned in the paper
- If it is an Australian native species I've not seen
mentioned before (checking first for synonyms in Balderson
1998) create a directory for it in the appropriate
place beneath the
phasmatodea/ directory tree structure.
- Extract description details, particularly looking for
- Adult (male, female)
- Nymph, each instar (male, female)
- Egg
It will often be necessary to translate into laymans terms.
- Extract sightings locations. Specific lat/long locations
to be placed into sightings tables. Vague generalizations
(e.g. ``NSW'') aren't sufficient.
- Extract details of the food plants, by species if possible.
- In the ``References'' section for the species, add a
line for this paper, hyper-linking back into the paper
under the
papers/ tree.
- If the paper is out of copyright and contains pictures
or figures, link them to the species, but store them in
the papers tree.
- For each paper cited in the Bibliography / References section
of the paper
- If I already have it, hyper-link it into the relevant paper
in the papers/ directory.
- If I don't already have it, add it to the To Do list.
- If the paper was previously on the To
Do list, remove it.
- Check newer papers, and if this paper appears in their
Bibliography / References section, hyper-link to the new document.
