Genus Eurycnema Identification Key

(Brock, 1998)

Key to adult females of Eurycnema
1 All tibiae lacking dorsal apical lobe or crest at base. Apex of cercus much shorter than tip of operculum 2
- All tibiae (but most conspicuous on mid- and hind tibiae) with a prominent dorsal apical lobe or crest at base. Apex of cercus usually equalling or exceeding tip of operculum; body length 160-198 mm E. versirubra
2 Cerci elongate; approximately 3-5 × longer than wide. Inner margin of hind tibia typically with 7-10 spines of modest or large size 3
- Cerci broad; 2-2.5 × longer than wide. Inner margin of hind tibia with approximately 7 spines, of which the fourth and fifth spines are more than twice as long and broad as the others; body length 172-204 mm E. goliath
3 Inner margin of hind tibia with approximately 10 green or brown spines, of which the central spines are slightly longer than other spines and more spaced apart. Cerci up to 7mm long; body length 170-221 mm E. osiris
- Inner margin of hind tibiae with approximately 7 black spines, of which the central spines are much longer and broader than other spines. Cerci over 12 mm long; body length 172-230 mm E. nigrospinosa

Key to adult males of Eurycnema
1 Forewings 15 mm+ in length, inner margin of hind tibia with approximately 6-7 spines, of which central spines are much longer and broader than other spines. Cerci of variable length 3
- Forewings approximately 10 mm in length, inner margin of hind tibia with 8-11 short spines of similar size. Cerci over 10 x longer than wide 2
2 Hind tibia with dorsal apical crest at base; body length 112-133 mm E. versirubra
- Hind tibia normal; body length 115-134 mm E. osiris
3 Mesonotum less than 4 × length of pronotum. Forewings approximately 15-20 mm in length. Cerci broad, approximately 4 × as long as wide; body length 121-146 mm E. goliath
- Mesonotum 4.5 × length of pronotum. Forewings approximately 24mm in length. Cerci elongate, approximately 7 × long as wide; body length 140-162 mm E. nigrospinosa

Key to eggs of Eurycnema

(Average measurements given for l = capsule length, h = height, w = width)
1 Egg round or broadly oval without ridges; capsule grey or light-medium brown or mottled 2
- Egg dark brown, almost oval, with numerous ridges; operculum rim with a series of raised tufts; l 6 mm, h 4mm, w 3.5mm E. goliath
2 Egg oval and smooth; capsule plain or patterned; capitulum indented. Micropylar plate of variable size 3
- Egg very round and smooth; capsule grey with large round yellow or brown capitulum. Micropylar plate rather obscure, tapering anteriorly; 1 4.6 mm, h 4.1 mm, w 3.8 mm E. versirubra
3 Elongate, oval capsule. Micropylar plate large, pear shaped. Operculum with broad black band; 16 mm, h 3.3 mm, w 3 mm E. nigrospinosa
- Capsule oval. Micropylar plate narrowed towards bottom of capsule. Operculum with a narrow black band; 1 4.6 mm, h 3.5 mm, w 3 mm E. osiris
