Subfamily Lonchodinae Identification Key

The following table, from Bradley & Galil, is pretty much useless, as Australian authors include 4 genera (hyrtacus, lonchodes, marcenia and austrocarausius) and it fails to mention any of them.

- Anal segment of male split and extended into 2 lobes and with 2 finger-form processes on hind margin; female operculum simple Lonchodini
- Anal segment of male not truly split but merely with 2 weak but distinct finger-form processes on hind margin; super-anal lamina of female often attached to anal segment without suture, anal segment and operculum elongate, latter bearing an ovipositor shaped like bird's beak Menexenini

Key to distinguish females/eggs of
Carausius and Austrocarausius

- Body elongate. Egg capsule with a network of large cells; micropylar plate short, rounded and inset into capsule. Distribution: north Queensland, Australia Austrocarausius
- Body more robust. Egg capsule plain with a narrow, elongated micropylar plate. Distribution: mainly Asia, with a few representatives in Australasia (status mainly uncertain) Carausius
