CodeCon 2005

A Code Con is a low cost conference for hackers and technology enthusiasts. Following the enthusiastic reponse to last years' Central Coast Code Con, it's on again.

You can't get much more low cost than The Basin Camp Ground in the Olney State Forest in the Wattagan Mountains. (Please don't ring State Forests with enquires, you will only confuse them. No booking is required, and no booking has been made.)

The Basin Camp Ground has open grassy campsites with easy access and a flowing creek nearby. Located away from the more popular areas, the Basin is suitable for large groups. Nearby creeks can be used for swimming in the warmer months.

Imagine a Code Con in this relaxed setting. We will have a marquee, a generator, a data projector (thanks Pia!), and a collection of coders. There is room for plenty of people in tents. Two nights and a two days of hacking and yacking.

Participants are asked to bring along a 5 to 30 minute talk on an Open Source related, or coding related, or software development related subject. You can expect a data projector for your presentation. Hardware hackers are also welcome.

Note: there is no Internet access (BYO satelite dish).

Bring your orange note with you on the day.

Getting There

Short version: Head up the Newcastle expressway and turn left into the green stuff.

Once you are on the Sydney to Newcastle Freeway, it takes about 25 minutes to reach 77m high Money Mooney Creek bridge with the bars to stop people jumping off, and then the Gosford Exit (Kariong) exit; DO NOT take this exit, but take the next one about 3 minutes later called Peats Ridge Road Exit.

Turn left and proceed along Peats Ridge Road for 8.1 km about 8 minutes this crosses a small road bridge and turns into Wisemans Ferry Road which you follow for a further 3.35 km about 6 mins.

Turn right at George Downes Drive (a fairly large intersection) and go 20.43 km about 20 mins. Along the way you will see the Kulnura General Store on your right.

Turn right at Walker Ridge Road and go 2.18 km about 4 mins; this is where the nice sealed road turns into a dirt road. Take the 4th left turn at Walkers Ridge Forest Road and go 5.56 km about 7 mins.

Turn left at Basin Forest Road (the signpost is on a high bank to your left that only the passenger can see) which winds down into the valley, and you will be at the Basin Camp Ground in about 2 minutes. Total time about 1 hour 15 minutes (about 90 km).

The unsealed roads are well maintained and easily accessable by ordinary 2WD cars, except after heavy rain, or unless you have pimped your ride by lowering it too far.

Car pooling

If you have spare seats or if you need a ride, check the CodeConCarPool page.

Whereis

You can get almost adequate driving directions from http://whereis.com.au/ by entering

From: SYDNEY NEWCASTLE FREEWAY, WAHROONGA, New South Wales
To: WALKERS RIDGE FOREST ROAD, CEDAR BRUSH CREEK, New South Wales

(Note that while the destination map shows Basin Forest Road, you just can't enter it as the destination address. Presumably two different databases are involved.)

Cartophiles

If you loves maps, you need the 1:25000 Murrays Run map, but we are in the bottom right corner, so you will also want the map to the south and to the east as well (see Maps Around Sydney for grid).

Murrays Run 9131-4-N Morisset 9131-1-N
Kulnura 9141-4-S Dooralong 9131-1-S

The Central Coast Forests map from State Forests also covers the area, but isn't very detailed.

Or you can try Google Maps. I told you it was green.

Each participant is expected to prepare a 5 to 30 minute talk on a project they are hacking on at present, or a hacking-type subject.

If you are coming, edit this wiki page and add your talk to the list above this line.

Daytime Activities

Hacking (of course), bushwalking, mountain biking (byo bike), horse riding (byo horse), and all those other excessively healthy outdoor-type activities.

Getting Food

The Kulnura General Store (mentioned in the driving instructions, above) is about 15 minutes away by car. It has a small super market format, plus it sells take-away hamburgers and chips etc, and ethanol in a variety of colours and flavours.

Don't forget to bring...

This is a completely BYO activity. Bring your own everything. For example:

Administrivia

Organizer:

Peter Miller

Dates:

The evening of Friday 26-Aug-2005 to the afternoon of Sunday 28-Aug-2005. That gives us two nights of good data projector / laptop use. Two nights of hacking and yakking.

The marquee is an older canvas one (i.e. not translucent white) so there is a good chance the data projector will be effective for some of the day, as well. I'll bring a white curtain liner for a screen, it worked well last year.

The marquee will be up before dark on the Friday night. You are welcome to arrive any time Friday afternoon or evening.

If you can only come for one night, that's OK too.

Bad weather contingency:

That's what the tents are for (as if Australia will escape the drought any time soon).

Register:

Send email to Peter Miller. I'd really like to have numbers as soon as possible.
